Mirlis Reyes, Ph.D. - Cuba


Dr. Mirlis Reyes Salarichs, originally of Havana, Cuba, earned her Bachelor Degree in Economic Science at the University of Havana. Her area of expertise as a researcher has been in Economic Thought, Development, and Political Economy. She earned her Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Macerata, Italy. The main objective of her dissertation was the critical analysis of Latin American economic theories about local development that highlight the role of institutions. During her doctoral studies, she also received fellowships to the University of Macerata, the Panthéon-Sorbonne University, and The Italian Association for the History of Political Economy (STOREP).


Dr. Reyes currently serves as a member of the Inter-American Defense College’s permanent faculty. The courses she has developed and taught at IADC include Political Economy of Defense and Security, Illicit Economy, and Perspectives on the Economic Cycle. Her courses are designed to familiarize students with different economic theories that deal with security and defense issues at the strategic level. She also serves as the faculty liaison for the Intercultural Communications Workshop, as well as the coordinator of the Crisis Simulation Exercise. Furthermore, she is the Editor in Chief of HEMISFERIO, the Journal of the Inter-American Defense College.


Professor Reyes has more than ten years of experience in education, conducting lectures on Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Managerial Economics, Economic Thought History, Community Organizations, Project Management, and Economic Cycles. Outside the IADC, she has served as Assistant Professor of the Capital Area Campus - Ana G. Mendez University System in Maryland. She has also been a visiting professor at several universities in different countries, such as Cuba, Italy, Ecuador, Puerto Rico and the USA.


Previously, she taught Economic Thought for five years at the University of Havana. She also served as Chief of Economic Thought Studies at the same university. While teaching there, she was awarded as an outstanding educator.


Dr. Reyes is a member of the Latin American Studies Association and serves as a consultant for non-profit organizations in the DC area. She is the author of several publications and a speaker at various international conferences and events.
