Rear Admiral Martha Herb
It is my great honor to serve as the Director of the Inter-American Defense College (IADC). Since its establishment in 1962, the IADC has been a premiere graduate educational institution for defense and security officials from the Americas. In May 2015, the IADC received full accreditation from ACICS to confer a Master’s Degree in Inter-American Defense and Security. The IADC is an international organization under the aegis of the Organization of American States as the educational branch of the Inter-American Defense Board. The College is hosted by the United States on Fort McNair in Washington, DC. Our mission is to provide a rigorous graduate education to prepare our students to serve their countries at the highest possible levels. International students study broad based defense and security issues affecting the region and the world. All classes are simultaneously interpreted in four languages: Spanish, English, French and Portuguese.
Our student body is comprised of military officers, police officials, and civilian government representatives from the American nations who will have future senior leadership responsibilities in the Hemisphere. Alumni include current and former presidents, ministers of defense, diplomats and general and flag officers throughout the Hemisphere. Our commitment to excellence is the foundation for the remarkable success that we have enjoyed.
The eleven-month program of study is designed to cultivate the ability to analyze, develop, and evaluate defense and security policy at the national-strategic level. Students receive a comprehensive education that expands upon themes expressed by the Organization of American States in its 2003 Mexico City Declaration on Security in the Americas and is rooted in the fundamentals of international relations, strategy development, political economics and multi-dimensional security challenges. Throughout the course, our students visit several of the critical democratic institutions located in the Washington, D.C. area as well as in the United States and most importantly within the Hemisphere. The College hosts three seminars during the year, providing our students the opportunity to interact with many of the region’s experts and influential decision makers.
Only through cooperation and dialogue can the nations of the Hemisphere hope to understand their shared values and reach the common goals of peace and security. In the more than 50 years that the College has existed, the world has seen several dramatic shifts in international defense and security. Now more than ever, the College is positioned to ensure future leaders are well prepared for this dynamic and challenging environment.
